Ancestry Testing
Ancestry testing involves using genetic markers to determine ethnic background.
There are three main types of ancestry testing: Y chromosome testing (available for men only), mitochondrial DNA testing (available for both men and women), and autosomal DNA testing which determines a percentage of ethnic background (available for both men and women).
The type of ancestry testing offered varies by provider. Click here to see the types of testing offered by each provider.
This testing is for informational purposes only and is not a medical (clinical) genetic test.
This testing is available online through the Direct-to-Consumer Genetic Testing providers listed below.
Ancestry (as part of Whole Genome Scan)
This method of ancestry testing uses SNPs to decipher ancestrial lineage. A SNP is a genetic change in which one "letter" of DNA differs from the usual "letter" at that point in the DNA sequence.
