How is schizophrenia passed on? (6 posts)

My father once told me that he has a brother who is severely schizophrenic. My father himself has also shown some signs of wild and random but nothing on the level he described his brother which would explain my father's coming and going since I was a small child. My sister has begun to show some signs of wild and random behavior lately. Is her behavior a result of my father's actions or was she doomed to feel the grip of schizophrenia as well? And why do I not feel schizophrenic? I am now 20 and my sister is 18. Is schizophrenic hereditary? Can it be diluted through generations? Or can it be dominant and suddenly rise?

In my family it is similar in every way in that i have a history in my family on the male side, with two uncles that are institutionalized for being schitzoid. However i was wondering if there is any previous recollection as to if anyone in your families bloodline of sleepwalking? The reason that i am curious is that there is a frequency in my ancestry of sleepwalking and it seems to be related and also hereditary the more i am learning about schizophrenia the more i am confident that it may very well be passed on from generation to generation, with note that it could lay dormant or skip, even be a lower symptom less form.Good luck and may peace health and happiness find you and yours.

I'm not positive on how exactly it is passed on, but i learned through studies, that if there is a significant outbreak of the flu or the chicken pox, while the mother is pregnant with the child, the rate that the child will develop schizophrenia is very likely.

I feel it has a lot to do with genetics and is passed on from generation to generation. From what I know there is a high chance of children obtaining schizophrenia from their parents as the illness usually runs in the family. I do not know if can change over generations but my guess is no as time does not seem to be a changing factor.

My father was diagnosed with schizophrenia in the later years of his life. Of his seven children, 3 females and 4 males, 3 males have also been diagnosed as schizophrenic at some point in their lives. One male has never been diagnosed as such along with the 3 females. So it may have something to do with gender.

I do think that schizophrenia is hereditary. I have an uncle who is schizophrenic and he got it from his dad. In addition, most of the genetics from his dad side, have some kind of mental problem. I for example have OCD, Even thought my genes do not get passed down from my uncles dad, but rather from my dads side. Anyway, it's kind of confusing. But, to answer your question, it all depends. Yes, it can be passed down by generations, but it's also likely that it might not.
