The causes of asthma are largely unknown. Asthma most likely has multifactorial inheritance. Multifactorial inheritance means that many factors are involved in causing the disease - genetic, environmental and lifestyle. Multifactorial diseases often run in families. In general, the chance for a multfactorial condition to recur within the same family depends on a number of factors. These factors may include the number of affected people within the family, the degree of relationship (close, distant) of the affected relatives, the sex of all affected people, and the type and severity of the defect.
